Polygon Foundation announced the successful activation of the Lisovo hardfork on the network's mainnet at block 83,756,500. The upgrade is one of the most significant in recent months, bringing gas subsidies for AI agents, smart contract compatibility improvements, passkey wallet support, and a flexible fee system.
PIP-82: Gas for AI Agents
The most innovative change is the introduction of PIP-82, which subsidizes gas costs for payments between AI agents. This is a direct response to the growing trend of agentic AI, where autonomous programs conduct transactions with each other without human involvement.
Gas subsidization lowers the entry barrier for AI agent developers, making Polygon an attractive platform for on-chain activity of autonomous systems. This also positions the network at the intersection of two of the hottest trends — AI and blockchain.
Smart Contract Improvements
Lisovo updates the Count Leading Zeros (CLZ) opcode for better smart contract compatibility. This technical improvement ensures correct operation of contracts that rely on low-level bit operations and expands compatibility with contracts originally written for other EVM chains.
Passkey Wallets and Fees
The hardfork significantly improves passkey wallet support — a modern authentication system that replaces traditional seed phrases with biometric data or hardware keys. This greatly simplifies crypto onboarding for mainstream users accustomed to Face ID and Touch ID.
A flexible fee system has also been introduced, allowing more precise transaction cost configuration based on network load. This improves transaction confirmation reliability and reduces the risk of transactions getting stuck due to insufficient fees.
Node Operator Requirements
The update requires node operators to upgrade their software to Bor v2.6.0 or Erigon v3.4.0 before activation. Binance has already confirmed support for the hardfork and temporarily suspended POL transfers during the upgrade, as is typical for network updates.
Polygon emphasized that the hardfork is part of the network's broader 2026 strategy focused on making money movement faster, simpler, and more reliable across on-chain systems, with particular attention to payment flows and wallet usability.
Impact on POL
The POL token price reaction to the hardfork was subdued — the market had already priced in the update over previous weeks. Analysts note that the long-term effect will depend on actual AI agent adoption and mass user migration to passkey wallets. Polygon remains one of the most active blockchains by transaction count and ecosystem development.
