MoonPay Launches PayBox: an AI Wallet Inside ChatGPT and Claude

MoonPay has opened access to PayBox, a service that lets ChatGPT and Claude buy and swap cryptocurrency on a user's command. It is one of the first mainstream products where an AI assistant gets controlled access to a crypto account instead of simply giving advice. According to the company, the funds stay under the owner's control throughout.

What exactly is PayBox and why build it?

PayBox is a built-in account layer that MoonPay placed directly inside the ChatGPT and Claude chat interfaces. Previously, buying Bitcoin or Ethereum through an AI chat meant switching to an exchange and finishing the transaction by hand. Now the assistant can carry out the whole transaction itself, provided the user granted permission in advance.

AI agents that trade crypto have been a talking point for over a year. Most such setups required handing private keys to third-party scripts, though. MoonPay took a different route and kept an intermediary account that the assistant can only operate within limits the person sets.

MoonPay mainly earns fees for converting fiat into crypto for third-party apps, games and exchanges that plug into its infrastructure as a payment backend. PayBox extends that same model. Instead of integrating a separate payment button into someone else's app, the company embeds a payment layer directly into a conversation with an AI assistant and gains a new transaction channel where millions of people already show up every day.

The gist: PayBox lets ChatGPT and Claude buy, swap and transfer crypto on a user's command, without giving either assistant direct access to the wallet itself.

The process runs on layered permissions

Technically, PayBox works as a separate account sitting between the user and MoonPay's platform. First the person links an account and verifies their identity, then sets the rules the assistant must follow.

  • Spending caps: the user decides in advance how much the AI can spend per transaction or per day.
  • Allowed actions are limited to purchases, token swaps and cross-chain transfers. The assistant cannot withdraw funds to an outside address without confirmation.
  • Every action starts as a request and only executes after the person gives explicit approval.
  • A full activity log stays inside the MoonPay account, so the owner can always see what the assistant did.

The final call still belongs to the human. The assistant only handles the routine steps.

The company stresses that access can be revoked at any moment right from the account settings. If a limit runs out or a person turns off permission, the assistant can no longer start any operation until new terms are set. That guards against a scenario where a chatbot, due to some algorithm glitch, tries to repeat or split the same transaction into several smaller ones.

Why ChatGPT and Claude specifically?

MoonPay didn't pick the two most popular AI chats by accident. A large share of everyday users' finance and crypto questions already run through them. The company is trying to become the payment layer wherever people already talk to an AI assistant.

There's a practical angle too. Modern assistants can already follow complex, multi-step instructions. PayBox effectively hands them a new tool: access to a payment account that can be operated through language instead of an exchange interface.

The trend goes beyond one product. Several major players have tested similar ideas in recent months. Bots that book tickets on their own, order goods or manage subscriptions are becoming common. Crypto payments turned out to be a convenient testing ground for such experiments, since blockchain transactions are technically easier to verify and cap than a regular bank transfer.

What does this mean for an everyday crypto holder?

For a regular user, PayBox mainly cuts down the number of clicks in daily routine. Instead of opening an exchange, finding the right pair and confirming the rate, it's enough to describe the request to the assistant, which then prepares the operation within the set limits.

In practice, it looks like this. A person types something like "swap part of my USDT for Ethereum," and PayBox drafts the operation at the current rate. The user is left with a single confirmation click instead of a dozen steps inside an exchange app. For anyone used to tracking rates and picking the exchange direction manually, this reads more like a convenient add-on than a replacement for the usual process.

MoonPay has traditionally offered Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana among its top supported assets, so those coins will most likely be among the first available through PayBox. Token swaps and cross-chain transfers are supported as well, meaning these accounts will function much like regular crypto wallets, just controlled through text instead of an interface.

Where does the AI payments market go from here?

PayBox isn't the first attempt to combine AI agents with crypto accounts, but it's one of the most visible launches involving mainstream chatbots. If users start trusting assistants with routine payments, MoonPay's competitors will likely offer similar built-in accounts of their own.

Regulators haven't singled out products like this yet, though the question of who's liable for a faulty AI transaction will surface sooner or later. MoonPay insists final confirmation always rests with the human, so legal liability doesn't shift onto the algorithm. Whether that argument holds up in an actual disputed case remains to be seen.

The company hasn't disclosed fee details for transactions made specifically through PayBox. If those turn out higher than a regular exchange trade, some users will likely keep handling swaps manually and only turn to the AI assistant occasionally for small routine amounts.

The coming months will likely show whether people are willing to let an AI spend money, even within modest limits. That will decide whether PayBox becomes a standard for chat-interface payments or stays a niche experiment.
