A Tokyo court has let Mt. Gox take another year over its payouts. The deadline for settling with creditors now moves from Oct. 31, 2026 to Oct. 31, 2027. For the Bitcoin market, that means an old debt stays in limbo.
Mt. Gox, one of the first big crypto exchanges, collapsed back in 2014, and the settlement with its customers is still going. This extension is, by the way, the sixth since 2023.
What exactly was extended
The decision was announced by rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi. According to him, the court pushed back by one year the deadline for base, early lump-sum and intermediate payments.
Creditors who went through every step without trouble have mostly been paid already, apart from certain payment types. The rest are waiting, because some have not finished the required procedures and others hit problems with payment processing.
Repayments in Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash began in July 2024. In March 2025, Mt. Gox said more than 19,500 creditors had received their money. How many people are still unpaid, the trustee did not say in the new notice.
How much Bitcoin still sits in the wallets
Arkham Intelligence data shows wallets linked to Mt. Gox holding about 34,400 BTC. At today's price that is roughly $2.8 billion. The trustee did not clarify what share of it is meant for creditors who remain unpaid.
For scale, Bitcoin trades near $81,400 now, after being rejected around $83,000 recently. A 34,400 BTC stack cannot break the market in a day. Traders still keep it in their scenarios, because Mt. Gox wallets are visible on onchain trackers.
What it does to the price
For the price, the effect is neutral for now. The extension neither adds coins to the market nor removes them, it only shifts the moment when creditors who have not yet filed can collect. When the news broke, Bitcoin was down about 1.3% on the day, and the cause is clearly not Tokyo.
This week the market runs on other stories: oil, AI worries, ETF flows. US Bitcoin ETFs drew $527 million, the most since September, and numbers like that move sentiment now. Next to them, the debt of a collapsed exchange looks like a side factor.
Expectations are trickier. Some participants have long built a scenario into their models where Mt. Gox coins return to exchanges. Each extension stretches that scenario and wipes clear dates out of it.
Risks for BTC holders
- It is unknown how many creditors are still unpaid, so the size of possible sales cannot be estimated.
- A creditor who finally files the paperwork gets coins right away and can sell them with no warning.
- Any transfer from Mt. Gox wallets hits the news instantly and sours the mood for a few hours.
- The 2027 date is not necessarily the last one, since six extensions have taught the market not to trust round deadlines.
Anyone planning to exchange Bitcoin to dollars should watch onchain transfers from known Mt. Gox addresses. Those are the headlines that hit feeds first and scare first.
What comes next
The next checkpoint is Oct. 31, 2027. If the case of missing creditors does not move, the trustee will probably ask the court for more time again.
The real signal for the market is not a new deadline but large transfers from Mt. Gox wallets to exchanges. Until they show up, 34,400 BTC remains a number on a tracker, not a sale.
