Sharplink, Bitmine and Galaxy Digital in the Preliminary Russell 3000

May 27, 20264 min read

Index inclusion triggers automatic demand. Hundreds of passive and active funds must hold every stock on a Russell list, making the indexes a powerful capital channel for companies that make the cut. In late May 2026, FTSE Russell published a preliminary Russell 3000 list that placed five crypto-market players among the candidates: Sharplink Gaming, Forward Industries, Bitmine Immersion Technologies, Galaxy Digital and Gemini.

Why Russell Inclusion Changes a Stock

The annual Russell reconstitution moves capital across thousands of positions. FTSE Russell runs three tiers: the Russell 3000 covers the 3,000 largest US public companies, the Russell 2000 spans ranks 1,001 to 3,000, and the Russell 1000 tracks the top thousand. The current minimum market capitalization for Russell 3000 entry is $146.4 million.

The mechanism is straightforward. ETFs and active funds benchmarked to Russell indexes must hold every constituent. When the annual list updates, new entrants receive automatic buying pressure from index-tracking assets. Russell 1000 ETF products alone hold over $1 trillion in assets. That is a structural effect, not a one-time trade.

The outcomes are predictable: higher liquidity, a broader shareholder base and greater institutional visibility. For companies that previously traded mainly with retail investors and niche funds, this is a qualitative shift in their investor profile.

Five Crypto Firms in the Preliminary Russell 3000

Sharplink Gaming holds Ethereum on its corporate balance sheet as its primary asset, with a market capitalization of $1.2 billion. CEO Joseph Chalom confirmed the company meets the criteria for Russell 2000 inclusion.

"Joining the Russell indexes will broaden our shareholder base and strengthen our access to capital markets."

Forward Industries runs a Solana treasury strategy, holding SOL as its core corporate asset. With a market capitalization of roughly $350 million, the company qualifies for Russell 2000. Chief Investment Officer Ryan Navi said index inclusion would expand its shareholder base, improve trading liquidity and increase visibility among long-term institutional investors.

Bitmine Immersion Technologies holds Ethereum and is targeting a higher tier. Chairman Tom Lee (founder of Fundstrat) noted that Bitmine's market capitalization has exceeded the $5.7 billion minimum for Russell 1000 eligibility. The company also disclosed a purchase of 111,942 ETH this week, its largest single buy of 2026.

Galaxy Digital, with an $11.55 billion market capitalization, also qualifies for the Russell 1000 alongside companies like Nvidia and Microsoft. Crypto exchange Gemini, valued at roughly $571 million, is eligible for Russell 2000.

Impact: If all five companies hold their positions through the final list on June 26, index ETFs will be required to purchase their shares. For lower-liquidity names like Sharplink and Forward Industries, even modest index-fund inflows could produce a noticeable uptick in trading volume in the weeks following reconstitution.

How Ownership Structure and Liquidity Will Change

Before Russell inclusion, the typical buyer of a crypto treasury stock is a retail investor or a specialized crypto fund. After reconstitution, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds and passive ETFs join the shareholder base. These structures do not pick holdings by conviction - they buy whatever the index requires.

For Sharplink and Bitmine as Ethereum treasuries, this creates a new dynamic. Their stock prices will increasingly track ETH market moves. An institutional investor wanting regulated Ethereum exposure through a standard brokerage account, without holding tokens directly, will have a tool available on Nasdaq or NYSE.

The same logic applies to Forward Industries: the stock becomes a regulated way to gain Solana sensitivity without self-custody of SOL. Galaxy Digital and Gemini operate as active businesses rather than pure treasuries. For them, index inclusion primarily means higher visibility and improved liquidity rather than a peg to a single underlying asset.

One effect worth tracking for crypto-equity watchers: after reconstitution, liquidity in Sharplink or Forward Industries may improve enough to attract hedge funds that previously avoided these stocks due to thin trading volumes. Higher liquidity draws larger buyers.

Timeline and Conditions for the Final Decision

FTSE Russell will publish three more updated lists: June 5, June 12 and June 18, 2026. The final reconstitution takes effect after the US market close on June 26.

Between now and then, each company's market capitalization must stay above its minimum threshold. For Sharplink and Forward Industries, whose capitalizations sit closer to the lower boundary, the risk is real. Crypto market volatility in May and June can drag treasury stock prices down quickly when the underlying asset sells off.

For Bitmine and Galaxy Digital pursuing Russell 1000, the bar is higher at $5.7 billion. Galaxy Digital's $11.55 billion gives it a comfortable buffer. Bitmine is closer to the minimum, which means ETH price action over the next four weeks will directly influence the outcome.

Crypto Treasuries Are Joining Mainstream Indexes

A year ago, a crypto treasury company entering the Russell 1000 would have seemed unlikely. Today two companies are credible candidates, and three more are at the threshold of the Russell 2000. This reflects a broader shift: Strategy, Metaplanet and dozens of smaller companies have adopted a model of holding Bitcoin or Ethereum as a primary corporate strategy. FTSE Russell applies no exceptions based on asset type.

For the broader crypto market, the Russell reconstitution is becoming a predictable annual mechanism for institutional capital to flow into crypto-adjacent equities. Each June, the pool of eligible candidates grows as treasury company capitalizations rise.

June 26 will determine how many firms receive final confirmation. The preliminary list is only the first draft.
