Description
Polymarket is a prediction market venue. You trade the probability of an event here rather than the price of an asset: an election result, a central bank decision, the outcome of a match. Every event splits into "Yes" and "No" shares. Each such pair is fully collateralized by 1.00 USDC, and the share price is the probability itself. If "Yes" trades at 0.62, the market prices the outcome at 62 percent. Once the event settles, shares of the correct outcome redeem at 1.00 USDC each and the rest go to zero.
Outcomes are decided by an external oracle, the UMA Optimistic Oracle, not by the platform. Anyone can propose a result by posting a bond in USDC.e, and anyone can dispute it. An undisputed resolution closes in about two hours. A disputed one goes to a vote of UMA token holders and drags on for 4-6 days. The venue is non-custodial, so nobody can change a finalized result. That cuts both ways: no arbitrary rulings, but no way to undo a mistake either.
The figures on this page (24-hour volume, liquidity, the list of active events) come from the venue's public API and refresh automatically.
Advantages
- A share price reads directly as the probability of the outcome, with nothing to convert
- Every "Yes" and "No" pair is fully collateralized by 1.00 USDC, so the winning payout is known up front
- Outcomes are finalized by the external UMA oracle, not by the platform
- Non-custodial model: a finalized result cannot be edited by hand
- The public API serves volumes and probabilities without a key, so the numbers here update on their own
Disadvantages
- A resolution cannot be undone. If an outcome is called wrong, nobody can fix it
- A disputed event takes 4-6 days to close, and funds stay locked in the position that whole time
- Liquidity is very uneven. Top events have depth, niche ones have wide spreads
- Each event's rules need reading on their own: they decide the payout, not the headline
- We have not checked terms of service or availability in specific countries, so consult the venue's rules
