MoonPay launched an app in ChatGPT Apps. Now you can buy Bitcoin directly inside the chatbot. No separate exchange search needed.
What just appeared in ChatGPT
On May 23, MoonPay added its dedicated app to ChatGPT Apps. Users can now buy Bitcoin, XRP, Solana, USDC and other assets without leaving OpenAI's chatbot. MoonPay joins other crypto apps already in ChatGPT, including OKX, CryptoAudit and RealOpen. Most of them only let you check prices. MoonPay went further and made it possible to actually buy.
The flow works like this. You tell ChatGPT what you want, say $50 in Solana. The bot clarifies details and generates a MoonPay checkout link. You go to MoonPay, complete the transaction. If you already have an account, it's just sign in and pay. First-time users go through KYC (ID verification and connecting a payment method).
How it works in practice
Kevin Arifin, Blockchain Engineer and Product Lead at MoonPay, described the idea: "It's like a broker that sits by you, not making financial recommendations, but educating you about the asset you're buying. ChatGPT is the perfect place for that." The chatbot acts as an educational layer: users learn about an asset and then hit buy.
Arifin pointed out that people already use ChatGPT for financial research. There just was no direct way to purchase right after that research. Now there is.
"These apps, whether it's ChatGPT or Claude, they're the new front door of the internet. People do multiple turns of research there to really understand what they're trying to do."

Why this is happening now
MoonPay is not just launching one widget. The company is moving into AI across the board. Earlier in May it acquired AI startup Dawn Labs and launched Dawn CLI, a trading copilot that converts plain text prompts into prediction market strategies. There is also the MoonAgents Card, a virtual Mastercard that lets AI agents spend stablecoins at regular online merchants.
The logic is clear. Hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT for research daily. Before, they would go to Google and then find an exchange. Now the full path can happen in one window. MoonPay wants to be where research turns into a purchase.
What still requires extra steps
Buying crypto through ChatGPT is not a one-tap experience yet. KYC is required for new users. The redirect to MoonPay's site is still part of the flow. Arifin compared it to Shopify: the bot provides a checkout link, it does not close the trade on its own. The next step, he said, is AI agents completing transactions without human input.
ChatGPT users are also constrained by what OpenAI chooses to surface. Arifin believes the full future lies with AI clients where agents interact directly with a user's local device.
What this means for the market
Buying Solana or USDC in ChatGPT is now open to people who never searched "how to buy crypto" separately. This is the mainstream on-ramp crypto has been talking about for years. For the first time it looks like an actual product, not a slide deck concept.
The real scale depends on how many people complete KYC in this format. But having a direct on-ramp inside the world's most-used AI chat matters. ChatGPT's active weekly user base tops 300 million.
