Ripple and Stripe-owned Privy bring embedded wallets to XRP Ledger

October 14, 20262 min read

Ripple and Privy, the wallet company owned by Stripe, will let developers embed XRP Ledger wallets in payment apps. Users can move XRP, the RLUSD stablecoin and other network assets without a separate crypto wallet. The integration is also built for AI agents that pay for data and services.

What the companies announced

According to a release shared with CoinDesk, developers will be able to create wallets inside their own products and authorize transfers of XRP, RLUSD and other tokens on the network. Privy handles the wallet infrastructure, so the app team does not have to build it.

A payments company could then offer dollar-linked transfers while customers never manage secret keys. Privy also supports exporting keys or a recovery phrase, so a wallet can be moved elsewhere.

On Tuesday the partners said they will deepen the integration, adding policy controls and tools to cover users' network fees.

Wallets for AI agents

Companies will be able to give AI agents, meaning automated bots, funded wallets to pay for online services. Privy's documentation mentions x402, a standard that lets software buy access to data without manual checkout.

An agent receives a payment request, authorizes the payment and gets the data once the transaction is verified, with no person opening a checkout page each time.

Ripple offered developers its first tools for such payments in June: creating wallets, checking balances and paying in XRP or RLUSD. In September it expanded the kit to support a standard developed by Stripe and the payments blockchain Tempo.

How many payments are real

RippleX head of engineering J. Ayo Akinyele wrote on X last week that the network had processed more than 13 million agent payments through x402, roughly 25% of ledger activity. According to the XRPL AI Hub dashboard, run by payment infrastructure developer t54, there were more than 14.3 million cumulative transactions and 169 registered merchants on Wednesday.

The value transferred is far smaller than the transaction count suggests. The dashboard records about 6,991 XRP and 12,752 RLUSD. At an XRP price near $1.38 that is under $23,000 in total, or less than half a cent per transaction on average.

  • these are software payments for individual requests, not large transfers
  • CoinDesk asked the XRP Ledger Foundation which apps use the integration and for data on the share of agent activity
  • no reply was included at the time of publication

Limits for new wallets

An embedded wallet does not work immediately. According to Privy's documentation, every new XRP Ledger account must first receive the network's minimum reserve, currently 1 XRP. Someone has to supply that XRP even if the customer only wants to send dollar-pegged stablecoins such as USDT.

For payment apps that is an extra funding step, and it has to be built into the cost of each new user.
