Mastercard and BVNK Launch a Platform Merging Fiat and Stablecoins

October 15, 20263 min read

Mastercard has launched Global Money Platform, an account where banks, fintechs and businesses hold ordinary money and stablecoins together and manage them through a single API. Put simply, stablecoins are moving off crypto exchanges and into payment infrastructure that millions of people use every day.

What exactly did Mastercard launch?

The platform was unveiled on Thursday, October 15. It combines Mastercard's global network with the stablecoin infrastructure of BVNK, a company Mastercard bought in August for roughly $1.8 billion. It is the first major integration of the two teams since the deal closed.

At the center sits a global money account. This is a multi-currency account where fiat and stablecoins lie side by side, and conversion between them runs through one API, meaning a single programming interface.

For anyone not following the topic, a stablecoin is a token pegged to an ordinary currency, most often the dollar, so its price does not swing the way Bitcoin's does. Transfers in such a token run over a blockchain around the clock, with no weekends or bank operating windows. The difficulty for businesses is usually that the technology has to be stitched into banking systems. Global Money Platform offers to close those seams with a ready solution.

Gist: Mastercard gives banks and fintechs a ready kit that lets them work with stablecoins without building their own infrastructure.

How does it work in practice?

Banks, fintechs and enterprises can embed such accounts into their own branded products. Mastercard describes the kit as modular, so a client takes the parts it needs and adds the rest later.

  • Storage and exchange: fiat and stablecoins on one account with real-time conversion.
  • Cards linked to stablecoins that can pay across Mastercard's merchant network. Card issuing is announced in more than 130 countries.
  • Payouts from a stablecoin balance to recipients' local bank accounts through Mastercard Move, the company's money transfer network.
  • In-house treasury and settlement for companies that want to manage money inside the platform.

According to Cointelegraph, Mastercard Move can route payments to more than 17 billion destinations, including bank accounts and cards.

Who connected first?

Among the first integrators are payments company Nuvei and card-issuing platform Marqeta, plus Ontop, Beem and Almond FinTech. Their gain is time: instead of building stablecoin infrastructure on their own, they plug into a ready one.

"The future of commerce will be built on interoperability across multiple forms of money."

- Raj Dhamodharan, executive vice president for blockchain and digital assets at Mastercard, from the Global Money Platform announcement of October 15, 2026

Dhamodharan called the launch a step toward programmable and agentic commerce, where AI agents make payments on their own. The platform will get support for agentic payments and tokenized deposits later. The company has already worked on AI-agent payments with Coinbase and Ripple and secured a New York BitLicense that covers stablecoins and tokenized deposits.

A tokenized deposit is an ordinary bank deposit recorded as a token on a blockchain. It stays a liability of the bank, unlike most stablecoins, which are issued by non-bank companies.

Why does it matter for the stablecoin market?

The launch puts Mastercard in direct competition with Visa, which in July introduced a platform for financial institutions to hold, mint and transfer stablecoins. Both giants now sell not only payment processing but also infrastructure under the client's brand.

There is a nuance. Standard Chartered research shows growing stablecoin transaction counts, even though the supply of the largest tokens, USDT and USDC, has barely changed this year. So usage is growing, not the number of coins in circulation.

What does it mean for a user?

An ordinary stablecoin holder will notice nothing right away, because the platform is aimed at companies. The change will reach cards and payouts, where a stablecoin balance can be spent without a separate manual conversion. The announcements say nothing about a launch in Ukraine specifically, so it is too early to count on such cards soon.
